Buying Guide to choose the Best Baby Stroller in India
How to choose the best Best Stroller ?
Types of Strollers –
Prams – Prams are ideal for newborn babies upto six months and are designed so that the baby can comfortably sleep in the bassinet.
Simply said, prams are cradle on wheels. The bassinet is covered by the canopy to protect the baby from sun, dust, or wind.
As the baby cannot still sit upright, the Prams are designed to give maximum comfort to the baby in the sleeping position. Harnesses are usually absent in Pram’s unless specially designed.
Standard Strollers – The most popular among the strollers and our recommended choice of all-purpose strollers.
From an investment perspective, you want a stroller that is versatile to serve you the longest. Standard strollers are ideal and can be used from Newborn to 4 years of age, depending on the model chosen.
The seats can be reclined; the strollers have a safety harness, and footrest can be adjusted as the baby grows.
Also, the wheels and braking system are ideal for good maneuverability. Some models have a child and parent tray; there are extra pockets and space to carry some toys or baby consumables.
If the parent is planning for another baby, an excellent standard stroller is an ideal investment that can be used for the next child as well.
Jogging strollers – These strollers are designed with good wheel suspension, for parents who desire to jog, brisk walk, or even go hiking with the baby in tow. Choose this stroller only if going for a jog or brisk walking is essential.
Jogging strollers generally have large wheels and are not the easiest to manoeuver, especially in malls, curbs, and crowded places. They are not the most compact to fold and stow away.
We don’t recommend jogging strollers as its not ideal for a developing baby who would prefer to move around slowly rather than moving at an uncomfortable speed of 10 to 20 mph.
Travel systems – Travel systems are a combination of standard stroller and infant car seat. The infant car seat is a cradle that can be detached from the stroller and is versatile enough to be used in the following ways.
* Infant Car Seat base can be secured in the car with the seatbelt and car seat base.
* Infant Car Seat can be used for independently carrying the infant without the stroller if it’s a brief trip.
* The Infant Car seat can be secured to the stroller for moving around like a standard stroller offers.
Needless to say, the transition from the car to the stroller can be done without disturbing the baby. This is ideal if the baby is asleep and where a smooth transition is needed.
Double Stroller – These strollers are often confused as twin strollers. No doubt, these strollers can be used to carry twins. However, do not let the word. “Twin,” fool you.
These strollers can also be used for parents with two children and are less than three years apart for transporting both the babies together.
Double Stroller Designs are
Side by side – In these variants, both the strollers are adjacent to each other and have a bulky frame design.
These strollers are comfortable for both the babies; the downside is its slightly tricky maneuverability. The maneuverability issues are highlighted in crowded places, bad terrain, and sharp turns.
Tandem Strollers – These strollers are designed that one child can be placed/sit behind the other. From a maneuverability perspective, tandem strollers are convenient compared to the side-by-side variant.
The downside of a tandem stroller is the legroom of the rear seat.
Size of the stroller – Usually, the strollers are available for Newborn to 3 years with some strollers designed for carrying children upto four years.
The size should be sufficient to carry the baby as he/she grows. Besides, an adjustable footrest would be ideal to adjust as the baby grows.
Build quality of the stroller – Check the sturdiness of the stroller and the durability of the frames and the weight it can carry.
Do a test drive of the stroller, check the brakes or swivel locks performance.
Weight of the stroller – On average, the strollers weigh around 6 to 12 Kgs. There are lightweight strollers, but the durability is questionable.
Also, a bulky stroller wouldn’t be ideal from a stowing and portability perspective.
Foldability of the stroller – Look for a folding stroller that can be folded easily when it has to be stowed or not in use.
There are some models available that can be folded with one hand. When folded, the stroller should ideally fit into the boot of the car.
Reclining seats – Look for a stroller with reclining seats. The strollers should have three recline levels as a bare minimum.
An upright position – when the baby has to be fed, a reclined angular position for the relaxed stroll, and the 180° horizontal position ideal when the baby wants to take a power nap while strolling. Some premium models have upto eight recline positions.
Cushion – Check the cushioning and material of the cushions. The cushioning should be comfortable and from a soft fabric.
Some models have detachable cushions which can be washed; others can be cleant with a damp cloth.
Safety Harness – Good strollers commonly have 3 or 5 point safety harness. We don’t recommend a stroller without a safety harness.
Five-point Harness vs Three-point Harness
Comprises the shoulder straps, waist straps, and a strap between the baby’s legs.
Three-point harness system – Comprises the shoulder straps and a strap between the baby’s legs.
The preferred choice is the five-point harness system for it being more secure. Needless to say that a stroller without a harness should be avoided.
The handlebar of the stroller – Check for a stroller that has an adjustable handlebar. An adjustable handlebar is incredibly essential considering the flexibility comfort of parents, grandparents, and other guardians who will attend to the baby.
Reversible handlebar – Allows the handle to be moved both ways, which means that the user can either have the baby facing outwards or facing the guardian while riding in it.
Wheels – The wheels should be sturdy. Front wheels should rotate and have swivel locks or brakes. Rear-wheel brakes are mandatory from a safety perspective.
Extendable Canopy – The Canopy should be expandable to protect the baby from sunlight and wind. A looking window in the canopy is ideal.
Storage basket – Check for the storage basket at the bottom of the stroller, which can carry toys or baby consumables.
Budget – The average price for a good stroller ranges between 3000 to 7000 Rs. There are premium strollers available at around the 10000 to 16000 price point.
Other Features available in some strollers
Mosquito Net – Some models have mosquito nets that offer additional protection from bugs and mosquitoes. Also ideal from a privacy perspective when outdoors.
Food Tray for the baby – Detachable food tray is available on some models that can be used when the baby is being fed.
A hook to hang soft toys – Some models have a hook for hanging soft toys.
Final Words to choose the right Baby Stroller or Pram
We believe we have given the best options for strollers with different features and budget options.
We have spoken at length of the stroller and its use for moving outdoors and travel purposes. However, for a growing child, the reclining stroller could also be used at home in an upright position to feed the baby.
The stroller also doubles up as a chair for those short times of the day when the baby (< 6 months) can relax. The five-point harness can provide additional safety to the baby as he/she relaxes and enjoys the view.
Infant car seats could be used as a cradle when not traveling.
Also, keep in mind that for outdoors, the stroller is ideal when the baby begins to sit upright from 6 months onwards.
Yes, the stroller can be used outdoors for Newborn babies as well. However, unless unavoidable, we recommend using the stroller when the baby is atleast six months for travel. The reason is that babies below six months are most comfortable and secure in the parents’ arms.
